Big turn of events, I'm going to try recycling full-time for a while. The bottom line is, I know I can yank $200/week from my complex (along with re-annexing the little mall across the street) alone, and that I can probably accomplish that by say, 10AM each day (sorted and ready to cash), but I need to figure out where the other $300 will come from, and after that, where the other $600 will come from. (My first month goal is $2000, but eventually I want to make $3300 a month.) I know I can sell the stuff that I dive for, and I'm thinking that's about $75/week, and there's other ideas I have that could produce the rest: Recycling at "soft" targets. (Places where the social acceptability factor is good, and the humiliation risk is low… outdoor parks especially. Can you think of other places that might be good daytime recycling targets? During the day, I'd have to think that apt complexes, malls, etc are off limits.) Also, I'm wondering if places like the bay and Fiesta Island might be good. Just hop on a bike, hitch on a little "trailer", and roam around.) Other stuff I can recycle… copper, sheet aluminum. Not sure where I can find it though. Strategic dumpster assalt - this would only work at "friendly" apt complexes, and you'd have to hit different complexes and spread yourself around, so not to come up on the radar… as in, "hey, who's that guy who comes around here every day, walking around". Which might not happen anyhow, since most people are at work. It’s more the maintenance people you have to worry about during the day. Anyhow, you just walk through like you're just on a walk or whatever, and casually peek in the dumpsters. You don’t have anything with you… bags, grabbers, etc, to draw attention to your self. You scout all the dumpsters to see if anything is there. Then you leave and come back with your car, and hit those ones in a row. It would probably be just a few. You're just going for "finds", or major recycling action. (cherries, cream puffs, etc.) I'm confident that after a while of checking out all the dumpsters in the area, I'll become a "dumpster psychic", and be able to predict which ones have the stuff. Just hit the ones in the neighbourhood that tend to have the stuff. A lot of times I'll come across ones that have $3 or even more in them. If you can string together 30 of those in a reasonable radius distance-wise, you have $100 right there.

[click-F-25] So the question that is burning in my mind since I cant find a single date on your post- are you still diving full time? Judging by that net proceeds to date button on the header there- Im going to guess yeah. I feel like a virtual high five is in order. Im a fellow diver as well- though Im mostly concerned with filling my fridge. That way- I barely need any money in the first place. Its always an inspiration to hear about others who are living completely as scavengers and making it work. Makes life so much more exciting. Urban hunting and gathering- I call it. Gets the adrenaline pumping. Frees up all of that time I would normally have spent working in an office. Never again- my friend. Anyways- if you can excuse the marketing moment...I post a lot of my own dumpster stories on my own blog- if your interested in checking it out. www.clickclackgorilla.com. Just posted a diving story today actually. Interested in hearing other peoples own dumpster codes and superstitio

[danny duis-M-49] one of the things you can do is look for new construction sites or remodeling projects going on as of feb 28th 2006 im getting .65 cents per pound for plastic coated phone wire- computer cable- just about anything with copper wire in it. wireing contractors dumpster are a good spot too check it on friday or saturdays this is when they clean out their trucks from working all week. telephone companies- cable companies- the list goes on and on- plumbing contractors heating and air contractors. think about who uses something your tring to find or better yet someone who has short term control over something your hunting and then will not want it any longer. in the dumpster it goes. danny

[raincoast-M-45] Hi Bandit- Good luck on your dumpster diving! I get more bread/muffins/baked goodies than I can use by visiting my local farmers market at closing time. Originally I had to get into the dumpster to retrieve the bags of goodies. But now the staff leave the bags on a bench beside the dumpster. Plus the pizza place in the market has started to leave the left over slices and one of the coffee shops fills my 2 litre coffee thermos with premium java instead of throwing out the java. A few other people have now joined me. We still end up throw away a least a bag of baked stuff each night. There is so much waste in this country and at the same time many people cant get enough to eat. Heres the ironic part - I can eat better food out of the dumpster than I can afford to buy. The bread I salvage is gourmet/artisan loaves - often $4/loaf. The same with the pizza - gourmet food. Who can afford to buy a few $4 loaves of gourmet bread and $3 slices of pizza every day.
